PNG Unites To Farewell Great Leader Sir Mekere Morauta

The great legacy of former Prime Minister, Right Honourable late Sir Mekere Morauta in his bureaucratic and political life, has united the country having paid final respect to him during the week-long State Funeral held at the Reverend Sione Kami Memorial Church in Port Moresby.

Tributes were flowing in from all corners of country, entire region and across the Atlantic Ocean. His greatness was known when he was gone. He passed away at the age of 74 in December 2020 following an illness in Brisbane and was laid to rest on Friday 08, January 2021 alongside his political enemy and former PM Sir Bill State at the Independence Hill close to PNG’s National Parliament. His body was repatriated into the country on December 31, 2020.

Sir Mekere, was a Papua New Guinean politician and economist who served as the 7th Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea from 1999 to 2002. Coming into a depressed economy and a fractious legislature, he embarked on fundamental reforms of the country’s economy and political system.

A packed church building at the Reverend Sione Kami Memorial church, had been gathering as early at 8am on Friday, 08th January, 2021 with political and business leaders, diplomatic heads, men, women and children from all walks of life in attendance.
