World mental health day marked in NCD

World Mental Health Day, themed ‘Suicidal Prevention,’ was marked in the city on Sunday morning of October 10, 2019. Laloki Psychiatric Hospital’s acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr Losaviti Daugunu with her staff partnered with the Active City Development program’s weekly Walk and Yoga for Life to celebrate the day.
NCD Governor Powes Parkop was leading the walk which was dedicated to celebrate the day. The celebration was boosted by the presence of members of PNG Defence Force, CEO for Port Moresby General Hospital Dr Paki Molumi, psychiatric and mental health advocate Dr Uma Ambi and Dr Newton Albert who works with the National Department of Health.
Thousands of participants and other city residents dominated the streets of AmazingPortMoresby chanting ‘suicidal prevention.’ Speaking at the end of the walk along the Paga Hill Ring Road, Dr Ambi said depression was one of the leading causes of illness and disabilities amongst youths. She added suicide was the third leading cause of death amongst people between the ages of 15 and 19. Dr Losaviti Daugunu, who was speaking after her, said to some extent people having problems tend to commit suicide with ill-perception that was the end of the world.
