Yoga Day Event Emphasizes Personal Health As Key To National Progress
Hundreds of residents, alongside NCD Governor Powes Parkop and officials from the Indian High Commission and United Nations, gathered at Ela Beach this morning to celebrate the 12th International Yoga Day. The event highlighted the critical link between individual health and the nation's development.
Hosted by the Indian High Commission incollaboration with the active city development program, the annual observance aims to raise awareness of the physical, mental, and health benefits of yoga.
Active City Development program uses yoga and other creative movements to promote behavior and mindset change to communities in Port Moresby.
ACDP works with underprivileged youth and support them to build skills in teaching, performing and being community change agents.
Governor Parkop stressed that while infrastructure progresses, the nation faces significant health challenges. "Development and infrastructure is progressing, but the quality of life, health especially and longevity is not improving," he said.
He urged citizens to take personal responsibility for their wellness rather than relying solely on the medical system.
"Investing in health and wellbeing is as important as investing in other sectors of development in our country," Governor Parkop stated.
He explained how maintaining his own health allows him to better serve the city and contribute to national success. "When I am healthy and well, I can think well, find solutions and help our people deliver the outcomes for our city and our country."
Echoing this sentiment, Indian High Commissioner, His Excellency Shari Rajeev Kumar, addressed the participants.
"When we are healthy, we will live long and contribute a lot to the development of not only this country but across the world,” said Kumar.
The event successfully underscored the message that a healthy populace is the foundation of a prosperous and developing nation.
