Momase Day Celebrates PNG Unity, Culminating National “PNG Story” Series

A record-breaking crowd of approximately 20,000 city residents converged at Sir Hubert Murray Stadium today for Momase Day, a resounding finale to the month-long “PNG Story” series.

The event showcased the diverse cultures and traditions of Papua New Guinea, highlighting the nation's unity and shared future on the eve of its 50th Independence anniversary.

Governor of the National Capital District and host of “The PNG Story,” Honourable Powes Parkop, addressed the enthusiastic crowd, emphasizing the significance of Momase Day as a culmination of a nationwide journey celebrating Papua New Guinea’s rich heritage.

The series began in the Southern Region on July 5, proceeded to the New Guinea Islands on July 12, then Highlands on July 19, culminating in the spectacular Momase Day celebration yesterday.

“The PNG Story” aimed to unite Papua New Guinea’s diverse communities through a vibrant display of cultural performances, music, and dance.

"The event featured captivating displays from University of Papua New Guinea Momasestudents, Momase cultural and contemporary groups, renowned artists such as Demas Saul and Gedix Atege, showcasing the rich artistic talent of the Momase region.

Parkop acknowledged the historical context, stating that the event represented not just 50 years of independence but millennia of cultural history.

He paid tribute to the founding father of this nation, Grand Chief Sir Michael Thomas Somare, whose vision and leadership inspired the nation’s unity and the successful execution of “The PNG Story.”

"This is a testament to the vision of Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare – to bring together thousands of tribes and over 860 languages under one flag," Parkop said.

"Tonight, we celebrate his legacy and recommit ourselves to building a brighter future for the next 50 years."

The event underscored the strength of Papua New Guinea's unity, despite the country's immense cultural diversity, proving that despite occasional challenges, a common national identity prevails.

The successful staging of the Pacific Story, the Asia Story and the PNG Story through the collaborated efforts of everyone involved including the National Government, the NCD Governor, National Capital Distrrict Commission, Amazing Port Moresby and the people of Papua New Guinea signifies a shared commitment towards a unified and prosperous future for Papua New Guinea.

The celebration served as a powerful symbol of national pride, reflecting the nation’s vibrant culture and its aspirations for the future.
